ADVISORY COMMITTEE
Composition
The BCI Advisory Committee is composed of globally respected individuals, with expert knowledge within specific areas of the global cotton sector, willing to support the Better Cotton Initiative throughout its implementation phase from 2010 to 2012. The members of the Advisory Committee DO NOT have to be members of the BCI. Acting as an Advisory Committee member is a voluntary personal commitment and can be terminated at any time by the member.
The members of the Advisory Committee are appointed by the BCI Council for a period of three years. The Advisory Committee is not a decision making or representative organ of the BCI, nor does it necessarily act as a ‘formal group’ in the form of closely working together or building consensus.
Areas of expertise
Each person of the Advisory Committee brings at least one of the following:
- Agronomic, environmental (including water in particular), and / or socio-economic (including gender approach) expertise in agriculture with a focus in cotton cultivation at a global level;
- A track record of working in agricultural development on the ground in different cultural contexts;
- Expertise in Programme Management, Monitoring and Evaluation methods and processes;
- Experience in Multi-Stakeholder Initiative delivery of agreed goals;
- Extensive knowledge of the cotton supply chain, with proven experience working within the chain;
- Extensive knowledge of the cotton retail market with strong communication skills;
- Expertise in fundraising activities for the not for profit sector; or
- Knowledge of and links with relevant international institutions.
Attention will be given to balance between the above areas of expertise.
Roles
Each member of the Advisory Committee plays at least one of the following roles in supporting the Better Cotton Initiative in the implementation phase (2010-2012): ‘Expert’ and / or ‘Influential Networker’.
Expert
Based on the experience and results from field implementation, the BCI Council will invite the Advisory Committee to review material and feedback from BCI’s monitoring and learning activities to draw recommendations for the BCI system at a global scale. The BCI Council will ask the Advisory Committee for its advice after the growing seasons 2010 and 2011 as a basis for possible decisions on immediate corrective actions and in more detail after the growing season 2012 as a basis for the planned revision of the Better Cotton System, in particular on the review of the Production Principles and Criteria, and the benchmarks. In addition, the Advisory Committee can be consulted by the BCI secretariat in an ad hoc manner, seeking advice on specific technical issues arising when implementing the BCI system, specifically regarding Production Principles, Criteria, Benchmarks and link to markets.
Influential Networker
Advisory Committee members well connected and respected in the cotton sector are invited to make use of their personal contacts and international networks, in order to promote and facilitate the implementation of the BCI. Advisory Committee members should specifically support the BCI Secretariat in securing good professional staff and in facilitating contacts for consultancies, research, management advice, and academic input as necessary.
