NATIONAL STAKEHOLDER COUNCIL

As the BCI 'goes live' in 2010, it remains committed to maintaining an open, inclusive and participatory process at both the global and national level. It is important to stimulate discussion on more sustainable cotton production and strengthen the collaboration of the different actors along the chain at both these levels. Moreover, ensuring the dissemination of the Better Cotton System beyond the ‘project approach’ and building institutional sustainability is central to the success of the Better Cotton Initiative.

To help stimulate discussion and build institutional sustainability, the BCI will establish a National Stakeholder Council (NSC) in every country wishing to grow Better Cotton, where groups with an interest in more sustainable cotton production can learn, discuss, exchange information and views, communicate about results and disseminate best practices. Importantly, the NSC will ensure that the opinions of all groups with a stake in Better Cotton production are heard.

The flexible concept of NSC presented in this document will be tested during the start-up implementation phase (2010-2012) and it is expected that the NSC will play an increasingly important role in the implementation of the Better Cotton System at the national level.
