COMPLEMENTARY PROGRAMMES
Three important programs aimed at improving cotton farming practices and/or helping cotton farmers and their communities are outlined below:
- Organic cotton emphasizes the elimination of synthetic pesticides and fertilisers.
- Fairtrade cotton focuses on guaranteeing a minimum price and providing a fair trade premium for social community-based projects.
- Better Cotton Initiative (BCI) will focus on the most relevant areas of social and environmental impacts with an aim to affect bulk cotton commodity production.
In addition to sharing a common goal of shifting an increasing share of cotton production to environmentally and socially more sustainable systems, all of these programs offer mutual support by:
- Promoting better farming practices and building capacity
Promoting access to market
- Making efforts to improve social conditions of farmers
- Having the potential to positively impact farming communities
- Promoting healthy soil
