HISTORY
Since 2005, the BCI has consisted of a collaborative global process, involving a wide range of stakeholders along the cotton value chain from farmers to retailers and brands, as well as civil society and international organsiations. The founding members are adidas, Gap Inc., H&M, ICCO, IFAP, IFC, IKEA, Organic Exchange, Oxfam, PAN UK, and WWF. Until July 2009, BCI has been governed by a Steering Committee of global organisations including producer organisations, trade & industry organisations, civil society, and international institutions.
During its design phase, the BCI has been engaging a variety of stakeholders to establish the elements of a 'Better Cotton' system. The milestones of the phases of development are as follows:
July 2009
- Publication of the Production Principles and Criteria 2.0 (Final version for implementation of the Better Cotton System until 2012) and Production Principles and Criteria 2.0 Explained.
- Public consultation on Principles of Participation and fee structure for Membership.
September 2008 - March 2009
Consultation with Regional Working groups on the finalisation of the defination of Better Cotton (Production Principles and Criteria and Minimum Production Criteria for the Farm Assessment): in Brazil (Sept. 2008), West and Central Africa (Nov. 08), India (Jan. 09), Pakistan (Mar. 09).
Ongoing consultation on Production Principles and Criteria, Farm Assessment and Supply Chain for Better Cotton with BCI Advisory Committee members; Better Cotton Partners; Experts and Friends.
The full Consultation Report (July 08 - June 09) with more details on the comments received, BCI's response to them, and further information about the development of a system for 'Better Cotton' will soon be available.
